Apps for the workflows still running on paper.

Mobile applications for small and medium-sized companies. Development for iOS and Android from a shared codebase, plus backend, system integration and operation from a single source.

Starting point

Data is created where there is no computer

In many companies the commercially relevant data is created outside the office: during installation, on the road, at the customer's site. It is recorded there on forms or photos, and someone else transfers it hours later.

This break in the chain costs twice over. Once in working time for re-entering the data, once in currency: scheduling, invoicing and analysis all work with yesterday's figures.

A mobile application closes the gap where it appears. Not as a new overall system, but as an addition to what is already in use.

Services

Services

3.1

Mobile applications for iOS and Android

Development from a shared codebase, from an internal tool to an application for end customers. Where the use case demands it, also under difficult conditions: operation without a mobile connection, deferred synchronisation, barcode and QR capture, usable while wearing work gloves.

3.2

Backend and system integration

The application is one half, where the data ends up is the other. I develop the backend, set up the interfaces to existing systems and take over operation on request. One contact for app, backend and infrastructure.

3.3

Taking over existing projects

When a project has stalled, the original developer is no longer available or store compliance is running out: I take over existing Flutter applications, bring them up to date and continue to develop them.

Technology in use

I also take over existing native projects: Java for Android, Swift and SwiftUI for iOS. New applications are built with Flutter.

04
Where the data lives

Where data is stored is a decision, not a detail

As soon as personal data is processed, and that is regularly the case with employee, customer or health data, the question of where it is stored comes before the first line of code.

I clarify the requirements in advance and choose the infrastructure accordingly. Operation exclusively in European data centres is possible, and where needed also on dedicated infrastructure without any of the large cloud providers.

You will know before the project starts which services are used and where they are operated. This rules out unpleasant surprises during a data protection review.

05
Scope

What I am not the right contact for

I develop software, meaning mobile applications and the systems behind them. This does not include hardware, embedded systems or system administration, nor pure design work or websites.

If an enquiry does not fit this profile, I say so in the first conversation and recommend someone more suitable where I can.

Reference project

Digitising the goods distribution of a relief organisation

A non-profit organisation in the USA supplies food to people in need. Distribution was documented manually, which made neither reliable traceability nor effective misuse control possible. The administrative effort tied up staff who were missing from distribution.

The result is an application suite of three components: an app for the staff at the distribution points, one for the recipients, and a tool for generating the registration codes. In productive use for 18 months.

Process

How a collaboration runs

  1. 01

    Analyse

Recording the workflow as it stands today. The result is a decision on which functions the application covers and which it deliberately does not.

  2. 02

    Build

Development in short intervals with working intermediate versions. You receive a first version to test after two weeks, not only at the end of the project.

  3. 03

    Deliver

Publication on the App Store and Google Play, setup of the backend, handover of the documentation. Store accounts and credentials stay with the client.

  4. 04

    Evolve

Operating systems and store policies change continuously. I remain available for maintenance and further development, without any obligation on your side.

About me
Julien Schminke

Julien Schminke

I am a freelance software developer in Herne, Germany. What keeps me in this work are systems that are actually used in daily operations and change something there. Since 2022 I have been building mobile applications with Flutter, along with the backends and the operation behind them.

My projects usually have an operational core. The largest of them has been running for three years at a relief organisation in the USA and is used daily by their staff.

Clients work with me directly. Concept, development, delivery and operation are in one pair of hands, with no project layer in between.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

9.1 Roughly what does developing an app cost?

That depends on the scope. An application for one clearly defined workflow starts in the low five figures, systems made up of several applications go beyond that. More reliable than any estimate over the phone is going through the workflow together. On that basis you receive a binding fixed-price offer.

9.2 How long does a project take?

For a clearly defined workflow, four to twelve weeks is usual. You receive a first working version to test after about two weeks, not only at the end. Publication in the stores then takes a few days.

9.3 Do we need technical knowledge in the company?

No. You do not need someone who understands software, you need someone who knows the workflow the app is meant to represent. I take care of the technology, the stores, the backend and the operation.

9.4 What happens after launch?

Operating systems and store policies change continuously. An app that nobody maintains for two years will eventually be removed from the store. On request I take over maintenance and further development under a monthly agreement. It is not obligatory.

9.5 What if you are unavailable?

A fair question with a sole trader, which is why my approach is built around it. Store accounts, credentials and source code belong to you and live in your repository. I work with Flutter, a widely used standard, and document in a way that lets another developer take over.

Contact

Arrange a first conversation

30 to 60 minutes, without obligation and free of charge. We look at the workflow you want to digitise, clarify the possible scope and what a realistic timeframe would be. Any commission comes afterwards.

Write me a short note about the workflow in question. A time can then be found in one or two messages.
